Region 425 AYSO’s EXTRA (Travel) Program FAQ
What is “Extra”? AYSO’s “Extra” program is for U-10 and U-12 players, and involves an additional two hour practice with professional trainers and an additional game on the weekends against other teams in nearby Regions. In addition, EXTRA teams participate in playoffs at the end of the spring. Roster spots are limited and therefore Region 425 holds tryouts to select team members.
Do I still play Primary AYSO? Yes, there is a pre-requisite that all EXTRA players continue to participate in the Primary AYSO program for both games and practices. Players are required to make at least 50% of their Primary AYSO team games. EXTRA is just that….EXTRA Play!! Playing EXTRA gives kids TWICE the play. Our players love soccer! In addition to the weekly EXTRA 2 hour practice and Sunday game, EXTRA players play on a primary AYSO soccer team. Required primary soccer includes one practice per week and one weekend game (Saturday).
What are the age cutoffs? Do they vary from Primary AYSO teams? There is an age cutoff. Region 425's primary AYSO is based on grade while EXTRA is based on birth date. See chart below for details:
U10-Under 10 as of 7/31/2016
U12-Under 12 as of 7/31/2016
Who do we play against? Games are played against other teams in Area 6D. The other Regions in our Area are Deerfield, Morton Grove, Highland Park, Rolling Meadows, Skokie, Glenview, Evanston, Peterson Park, Rogers Park, and Chicago Lakefront. Not all of these Regions will have EXTRA teams.
When are practices? Practices will be on Mondays from 4:30-6:30.
When and where are the games? The games will not conflict with the primary game schedules. The games and practices will start after the school year begins. The schedule for EXTRA games has not yet been determined but game times will be around 5-5:30 on Sundays.
When is the EXTRA season? The EXTRA season typically starts a week before the regular AYSO outdoor season and playoffs are usually the first weekend in June.
What is required for tryouts?
1) Register beforehand at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/EXTRAtryout
2) Tryout cost is $25.00. Payment can be made by check or cash on the tryout day.
3) Please complete TRYOUT FORM and bring to Corwin on the tryout day.
What is the cost? Cost for the EXTRA program is $400. If your child makes the team and accepts the invitation to play, the non-refundable payment is due in full within two days of notice. If not paid, the slot will be offered to the next player on the list.
How will players be rated at try-outs? Players will be evaluated by UK trainers on all aspects of AYSO soccer: Dribbling, Passing, Ball Control, Athleticism and Attitude. Attitude includes ability to listen and follow instruction, and preparedness with proper equipment.
What should players bring to the tryout? Your child should come ready to play soccer: shin guards, socks, cleats and water bottle. Remember AYSO never allows: jewelry, hats, splints or casts or earrings.
How many players are on a team? For U10, there are 10 players on a team. For U12, there are 12 players on a team.
Who coaches the EXTRA team? Certified volunteer coaches partner with professional UK coaches who assist with weekly practices and game evaluations.
Can there be more than one team per division? If there are enough coaches and high quality players for more than one team, then we will have two evenly balanced teams.
What else should I know? If your child is involved in lots of activities, EXTRA might not be for him or her. Players who make the team are expected to attend EVERY practice and EVERY game. A full commitment is required and players and parents must sign a commitment letter. Last year's commitment letter can be found HERE.
